Durability and the manufacture of industrial machinery: reconciling performance and responsibility

A growing demand from the market and principals

Today, manufacturers are under increasing regulatory, economic and societal pressure to limit the environmental impact of their equipment. The European Ecodesign Directive, ESG criteria, CSR initiatives, and the demands of end customers are forcing a new approach to machine design: thinking across the entire life cycle, from material impact analysis to end-of-life recovery.

Mechatronic design and sustainable materials

At SEMSO, sustainability starts right from the preliminary design phase. Structural choices (recycled stainless steel, optimized aluminum profiles, food contact-compliant HDPE or POM engineering plastics) are guided by their ability to withstand constrained environments while remaining dismountable and reusable. Each machine is designed to incorporate a logic of dismantlability and modularity.

The systems developed for SEMSO industrial conveyors are a case in point: dismountable welded structures, tool-free replaceable food belts, disengageable drives.

Integrated energy consumption reduction

.

SEMSO integrates IE3/IE4 motorizations, vector drive control, and above all efficient automation logic: automatic shutdown of inactive zones, dynamic speed variation, load detection for adaptive control. The whole package is designed to optimize the line's overall energy efficiency.

This logic is also applied to our packaging machines, where cycle savings and reduced idle times contribute to a measurable reduction in consumption per unit produced.

Predictive maintenance: a concrete lever for sustainability

Anticipating wear means avoiding waste. SEMSO equips its machines with IoT sensors (vibration, temperature, motor intensity) coupled with a supervision interface to analyze drifts. This makes it possible to intervene before breakage, extend maintenance cycles and ensure long-term performance reliability. All maintenance plans are supplied digitally, with digital twin logic available on request.

Towards a more circular industry

Sustainability isn't just about new. SEMSO offers mechatronic retrofit services, enabling existing equipment to be modernized with current, low-consumption components. This avoids systematic replacement, limits manufacturing-related emissions and enhances the value of existing machine capital.

The sustainable design of industrial machines is a challenge where technical performance, economic sustainability and environmental responsibility converge. As a manufacturer, SEMSO develops concrete, differentiating solutions, at the service of a more efficient, more sober industry, capable of evolving over time.
